Town Centre Churches

The Rector writes …

Since I last wrote to you, churches all over the country have responded to an unexpectedly large increase in instances of the Corona Virus by suspending Sunday worship and that is also our position in Bournemouth Town Centre Parish.

For the duration of this lockdown, there will be no Sunday worship ‘in person’ in St Peter’s, St Stephen’s or St Augustin’s.

St Peter’s Church building will be cleaned, as usual, each week and will be open on weekdays for quietness and private prayer.

There will be a weekly Communion Service (a Mass) at St Stephen’s each Wednesday at 10am,  and we ask everyone who comes to wear a mask throughout the Mass and to sit, please, at some safe distance (2 metres) from other people. I’m afraid that you should not come if you have been in close contact in the previous week with someone whom you know to have tested positive.

Worship will, of course, continue – but online.  We became used to this during the first lockdown.  It does not pretend to be the same as worshipping together, interactively, in person in our beautiful church buildings; but it does enable each of us to lift our hearts and minds to God in praise and thanksgiving, in supplication and intercession, and sometimes in grieving and lament. We can gain strength from knowing that others are joining-in these digital acts of worship from a distance, and we can pray for each other, for all who are suffering and fearful, for our loved ones who have died, and for those who care for the sick in NHS and care homes.  We pray God speed the spread of the vaccinations!

My technical ability is occasionally challenged (you might notice) as I work on including a variety of media – no worries, we shall get there! (And I’m sure that God has a sense of humour, so I hope that you will also take the odd clunky bit in good part.)

Many people of all ages are finding these changing times unsettling and disturbing.  If it might help you to talk with me then I would be delighted to ring you when I am free, during normal working hours, if you email me (ianterry@live.co.uk) asking that we might talk in this way and leave me your telephone number.

I hope that you find our video services helpful.

With my prayers and very best wishes at this difficult time,

Ian Terry
